Endowed Scholarships

Joel M. and Lenore Lewis Abels Endowed Scholarship 

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for students majoring in Tourism and Hospitality Management to honor the achievements and memories of Joel M. and Lenore Lewis Abels who best exemplify their spirit of professionalism.


Delores M. Andy Endowed Scholarship 

The purpose of the Delores M. Andy Scholarship is to recognize graduating seniors majoring in Sport and Recreation Management who best exemplify the “spirit” of volunteerism in their communities. Professor Emerita Delores M. Andy was herself a nationally recognized model of volunteerism, having provided outstanding service to her own community. She was also well known as a leader, a teacher, a mentor, and a creator of opportunities for students to reach their full potential. Her commitment to excellence and professionalism is what led STHM alumni to establish the scholarship fund.


David Bitman Endowed Scholarship

The David Bitman Endowed Scholarship is given annually to an outstanding junior or senior in Sport and Recreation Management with plans to pursue a master’s degree in Sport and Recreation Administration at Temple University. Additionally, a strong emphasis will be placed on community service when selecting the recipient. Eligible candidates are selected by a committee appointed by the Dean. Candidates who are planning to pursue a Master’s degree in Sport and Recreation at Temple University are identified from the Junior and Senior classes. 


Marie Baker Brown Endowed Scholarship

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for juniors and seniors in Tourism and Hospitality Management who best exemplify the spirit of hospitality and devotion to the industry as displayed by Marie Baker Brown.

The scholarship period has closed and will resume in Fall 2017


Evens Charles Endowed Scholarship

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for senior undergraduates majoring in Tourism and Hospitality Management in STHM with financial need. Students must be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant Program as a part of their financial aid package.

Students must also be graduates of (i) Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington DC, (ii) a Philadelphia public high school or a Philadelphia public charter high school, (iii) a District of Columbia public high school or District of Columbia public charter high school (iv) a Prince Georges County, MD public high school or a Prince Georges County public charter high school, (v) a Baltimore City public high school or a Baltimore City public charter high school (vi) a Chester Upland public high school, (vii) a Trenton, NJ public high school, (viii) a Newark, NJ public high school, (ix) or a Camden City public high school.


Delores W. DeShields Endowed Scholarship

(Applications usually due spring of each year)The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for juniors or seniors enrolled in STHM who best exemplify the spirit and passion for travel and tourism that Delores DeShields displayed. The recipients should display a determination to achieve academic success, to have dreams, and to never give up through challenges and disappointments. Eligible candidates are selected by a committee appointed by the Dean. The Committee will contact candidates regarding submission of a resume and essay on the topic of global travel or destination management.


The Tamara Gilmore Scholarship Fund

The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarships to students enrolled in the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management who are intent on a career in hospitality and event management, with preference given to students who are under-represented in this field of study and exemplify Ms. Gilmore’s professional and entrepreneurial spirit.Once an application has been submitted, eligible candidates will be contacted regarding submission of a resume and essay. Applicants should be intent on a career in hospitality or event management. 


Linda Higgison Scholarship 

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for students enrolled in the Event Leadership Certificate Program and who exemplify the passion for the events industry as displayed by Linda Higgison.


John Mannino Endowed Scholarship 

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for students majoring in Tourism and Hospitality Management who best exemplify the John Mannino’s passion for the hospitality industry.Once an application has been submitted, eligible candidates will be contacted regarding submission  of a resume and essay on the topic of hospitality.This scholarship is based on financial need. 


Pennsylvania Wine and Spirits Association (PWSA) Scholarship

The purpose of this PWSA scholarship fund is to provide one annual scholarship to a student based on academic excellence and significant financial need in STHM.


The Nicholas Anthony Rago Endowed Scholarship Fund

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for students enrolled in STHM who have financial need and who have demonstrated significant involvement in extra-curricular activities.


Ira G. Shapiro Scholarship Fund

The purpose of the Ira G. Shapiro Scholarship is to recognize undergraduate students in STHM who best exemplify academic excellence and outstanding leadership. During his 44- year tenure at Temple University, Professor Emeritus Shapiro often referred to those students as the ones who reminded him of why he chose a career in higher education – for the honor and the privilege of working with outstanding students, the next generation of leaders in the sport, recreation, tourism, and hospitality industries.


STHM Senior Seminar Endowed Scholarship Fund 

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships to selected senior internship students in sport, recreation, tourism, or hospitality.Once an application has been submitted, eligible candidates will be contacted regarding submission of a resume and essay. This scholarship is based on financial need.


Gavin White, Jr. Scholarship Fund 

The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarships to underrepresented students who are receiving their degree in Sport and Recreation Management in the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management, who best exemplify Gavin’s spirit of perseverance, academic excellence and community involvement.Once an application has been submitted, eligible candidates will be contacted regarding submission of a resume and essay. Applicants should be sport and recreation majors.
