This fall Temple’s Main Campus Esports Club named Cole Murray the very first student recipient of a $2,500 esports scholarship. The club raised funds for the scholarship through its first esports 24-hour live streaming event, held collaboratively with Temple’s Japan Campus on April 17–18, 2021. The School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management’s (STHM) Sport Industry Research Center (SIRC) then matched those funds.

Like many students at the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM), Jessica Lachowicz ’21 completed her degree through gaining hands-on professional experience that was tailored to her interests. However, she was one of two STHM students who had internships last spring specifically devoted to the essential issues of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Through her work with the young organization Tourism Diversity Matters (TDM), Lachowicz aided the chamber of commerce of a major travel destination in the search process for a DEI officer.

The chapter of Eta Sigma Delta (ESD) at Temple’s School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management’s (STHM) has been recognized as the recipient of the 2021 ESD Chapter of Distinction Award from the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (ICHRIE).

Since STHM’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) has established a series of scholarships that expand the diversity of the student body. These opportunities for funding have made STHM degrees possible for an even wider array of students, including five master’s degree candidates from historically underrepresented groups.

Two Sport and Recreation Management (SRM) faculty members at Temple University’s School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) have been named Research Fellows by the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM). Dr. Gareth Jones (STHM ’13, ’11), assistant professor and assistant director of the Sport Industry Research Center (SIRC), and Dr. Elizabeth Taylor, assistant professor, have received this prestigious recognition that sets them apart in their field.

Temple University is proud to announce that the U.S.-Asia Center for Tourism & Hospitality Research at the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) has recently been designated a Knowledge Partner of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). This recognition sets the school apart as one of only 10 such partners worldwide—only 3 of which are academic centers, and STHM is the only one from the U.S.

The Center for Hospitality Resilience’s brought students in as partners to serve the community through her capstone class in the Master in Hospitality Management program. Center Co-Director Dr. Ceridwyn King devised last fall’s version of the course to be a hands-on learning experience that lent post-pandemic support to a key industry partner.
