With more than two decades of classroom experience, Dr. Mahan has been with the School of Sport, Tourism & Hospitality Management since 2009. He has taught a range of courses at both the undergraduate and Master’s levels, including sport marketing, research and current issues in sport management. Additionally, he has developed a sport media and communication course for both the B.S. in Sport & Recreation Management and M.S. in Sport Business programs. Consistently rated as a highly-effective instructor by students, Dr. Mahan also has been recognized for teaching innovation and excellence; twice, he has been named STHM Outstanding Teacher (2012-13 & 2014-15), was named as a Fox/STHM Dean’s Teaching Fellow (2013-2015), and has received a Leader in Teaching Innovation Award from the Fox School of Business in 2014.
Dr. Mahan's general research interests lie in the area of sport consumer psychology and fall into two separate yet related streams: consumer response to sport marketing communications and the use of digital social media in sport marketing. His research has appeared in a variety of academic journals, including Journal of Sport Management, Sport Management Review, and Journal of Business Research. In addition, Dr. Mahan has presented at a variety of national and international academic conferences, including the North American Society for Sport Management, Sport Marketing Association, European Association for Sport Management, Society for Consumer Psychology, and the Consumer Personality Research Conference.
