STHM PhD Nataliya Bredikhina has won a highly prestigious student research competition presented by the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), a premier professional academic association in the field.

This year, Skylar Burg ’22, a Sport and Recreation Management senior, lived the dream—all the way to the Super Bowl. Hers is a story of initiative and drive, which landed her an exceptional internship with the Los Angeles Rams, and of how she’s seized every opportunity once she got there.

STHM graduate student Tate Kay (MSSB ’23), administrative extern for the department of Sport and Recreation Management, recently sat down with new faculty members, Dr. Bradley Baker and Dr. Jonathan Howe to discuss their academic paths to Temple and research interests.

Since STHM’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) has established a series of scholarships that expand the diversity of the student body. These opportunities for funding have made STHM degrees possible for an even wider array of students, including five master’s degree candidates from historically underrepresented groups.

We spoke recently with several who are working at Philly’s new Live! Casino & Hotel and Maestroe Sports & Entertainment, who were eager to share how their STHM experience has translated directly into a career opportunity that’s as exciting and it is valuable.

Ameena Soliman (FOX ’17, STHM ’19) was one of two alumni honored this spring with a Young Alumni Diamond Excellence Award—just one of the ways that she stands out as an alumna as well as a scouting pro in the NFL. She has shown her leadership and accomplishments to be exceptional in numerous ways in the two years since she earned her master’s at STHM.

On March 8, STHM hosted a vibrant discussion among three women entrepreneurs in the sport industry on their varying experiences in founding and running companies.

There has been debate over how much name, image and likeness (NIL) legislation would assist athletes aside from big-time football and men’s basketball stars. However, new research from Thilo Kunkel, director of the Sport Industry Research Center and associate professor at Temple University’s School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM), suggests that female student athletes and athletes from some of the less-popular college sports might also have much to gain.

There are only three women to both become a Fulbright Scholar and pursue a master’s degree in sport business. Soad Younis is one of them.
