Established in 1998, The School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) has a distinguished tradition preparing leaders in the sport, recreation, entertainment, event, tourism and hospitality industries. It is the largest provider of talent for these industries in the greater Philadelphia region and beyond.

Fusing Tradition and Innovation since 1998

Established in 1998, the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) has a distinguished tradition preparing leaders in the sport, recreation, entertainment, event, tourism and hospitality industries. We create experiences that make a difference and provide talent for these industries in the greater Philadelphia region and beyond. Prior to becoming STHM, Temple has been offering programs in these fields since the early 1900s.

Timeline

1908 – Temple offered courses in playground supervision through its Physical Education program.

1974 – Creation of College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and new Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies.

1980s – Offerings expanded to include courses in recreation, leisure studies, campus recreation, tourism and commercial recreation.

1998 – Temple University established the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management. The new school offers four degree programs: Bachelor of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Bachelor of Science in Sport and Recreation Management, Master of Tourism and Hospitality Management and Master of Education in Sport and Recreation Administration.

2016 – Temple University’s Board of Trustees voted to approve the school’s motion for rebranding to become the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM).

2017 – STHM launches two new online graduate programs: Master of Science in Travel and Tourism and Executive Master of Science in Sport Business

2018 – The Master of Tourism and Hospitality Management curriculum was revised to meet the needs of the industry. The program was reintroduced as the Master of Science in Hospitality Management

2022 – STHM launches the Bachelor of Science in Event and Entertainment Management. 

2024 – STHM undergraduate curriculum and degrees are revised to align with the growing industry. Three undergraduate degree programs are offered: Bachelor of Science in Sport and Entertainment Management, Bachelor of Science in Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management and Bachelor of Science in Multidisciplinary Studies in Sport, Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management. The multidisciplinary studies degree is designed to meet the needs of transfer students.

STHM & Philadelphia

More Than Twenty Years Innovating Education

Philadelphia is a living laboratory for the sport, recreation, entertainment, event, tourism and hospitality industries. As the United States’ sixth-largest city, Philadelphia is a premier destination for visitors from around the world. Home to 16,000+ hotel rooms, 1,000+ food establishments, a growing casino and gaming scene and the Pennsylvania Convention Center–the city provides countless opportunities for applied learning. Powered by two dynamic destination marketing organizations–Visit Philadelphia and the PHL Convention & Visitors Bureau–Philadelphia attracts thousands of visitors to see and experience attractions like the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Zoo.

In addition, Philadelphia is host to world and national events including the 2015 Papal visit, the 2016 Democratic National Convention and the 2017 NFL Draft and the 2026 World Cup. Annual events such as Wawa Welcome America held every July, the Philadelphia Flower Show and the Budweiser Made in America Festival (music fest founded by Jay Z) held Labor Day weekend, provide ample opportunities for experiential learning at the highest level.

Philadelphia is America’s Sport Destination. Home to the Phillies, Eagles, 76ers, Flyers and Union, the city offers students and fans a venue to experience all five major sports. Additionally, Philadelphia is home to the Philadelphia Freedom (world team tennis) to offer a diverse sports scene. The Philadelphia region is also a national destination for college athletics with numerous college and university athletics programs in the city of Philadelphia. Offering world-class venues, Philadelphia is also routinely a host for major national and international sporting events such as the Army-Navy game, the U.S. Open (golf) the X-Games, All-Star games, US Olympic trials and NCAA events such as March Madness basketball and the Frozen Four. Finally, home to a large, diverse parks and recreation system, Philadelphia is an ideal place to study and experience the sport and recreation industries.
