Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing a Program

What is the difference between an M.B.A and Specialized Masters (M.S.) degree?

A Specialized Master’s offers you specialized training in a field of study that includes applied and theoretical topics. Learning objectives are crafted to the needs of the specialized field and may consist of learning paths toward specific professional credentials. You will take courses with students who feel passionate about the industry or field and hope to become a subject matter expert.

An M.B.A. or Master of Business Administration prepares you for senior management or leadership roles by teaching key management principles like communication, finance, resource management, strategic planning and business ethics. You’ll study with peers from various industries seeking decision-making roles.

Academic History

Are official transcripts required for the application?

US-Based Education Institutions

Official transcripts from US-based institutions are required and must be sent directly to Fox and STHM Graduate Admissions. An official transcript is one sent from higher education institutions directly to our admissions department via email or direct mail. Transcripts—regardless of format—that are opened by or sent from you are not considered official.

Non-US Institutions

If you attended an education institute outside of the United States, please visit the Graduate School’s International Applicants page for further information on document requirements.

What if I’m still in the process of completing my degree?

For applicants with degrees in progress, you may provide copies of your current transcript. Once you graduate from the program and confer your degree, you must send a final official transcript to our Admissions Office.

I earned undergraduate credits at multiple institutions. Are transcripts required from each of those?

Yes. You will need to submit a separate transcript from every institution you attended where you earned credit.

I can’t find my institution in the drop down. What should I do?

For non-US schools, please select your country and type only the first three letters of the name of the school. If you still do not see your institution, please click the “School Not Found” button. Once you click this button, please type the full name of your institution and its address in the text box.

For US schools, please first search by Country and State. We then recommend typing in the name of the city or town in which your institution is located. Most US schools are within this directory. If you still do not see your institution, please click the “School Not Found” button. Once you click this button, please type the full name of your institution and its address in the text box.

I completed a non-credit certificate program, should I add this to my application?

There is a separate section in the application where you can share your professional, non-credit certificates or credentials.

For educational, credit-granting certificates, please include the program’s information in the Academic History section on the application.

Work History

What should I do if I do not have any full-time work experience?

A professional resume or CV should be uploaded regardless of full-time work experience. If you do not have full-time work experience, please upload a resume highlighting your academic and extracurricular achievements.

Recommendations

Who should be selected to be a recommender?

We encourage you to request letters of recommendation from an immediate supervisor, current or past, who can write about your ability to succeed in graduate study. Academic references are also acceptable. If you are self-employed, letters may come from long-time clients.

After you submit your application, you will be able to add your reference’s contact information through the application portal. References are then invited to upload their letters of recommendation.

What should I do if my recommender is unable to submit their letter through the application portal?

If your recommender is having difficulty uploading their letter to the application portal, they can email their letter to foxdocs@temple.edu

Can I submit a letter I received from a recommender?

No, a letter of recommendation must be either uploaded directly in the portal or emailed from the recommender. If they are having issues with submission, please direct them to foxdocs@temple.edu.

What should I do if my recommender is unresponsive?

You may edit or change your recommenders at any point during the application process, even after you have submitted your application. Our application portal also allows you to resend the recommendation invitation if needed. Note: We encourage you to check on the status of your recommendations via the recommendation section regularly.

Essays

What should I write about in my Statement of Goals Essay?

The Statement of Goals is a required essay (500-word max) that addresses your professional plans and goals. Within this essay, you should also address the following questions:

  • What past experiences prepared or motivated you to pursue this degree?
  • How would you expect to change over the course of the program?
  • What personal and professional values and skills do you hope to acquire beyond the academic content?

How will obtaining this degree help you achieve your career goals?

What is the optional essay?

You may use this optional essay to present additional information to the admissions committee. We recommend providing an optional essay to address specific circumstances regarding your application, such as an undergraduate GPA below 3.0.

Is there a word limit for my essays?

Yes, we require that the essays are 500 words maximum.

GMAT/GRE Scores

Are GMAT or GRE test scores required?

No. For graduate study at the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management, GMAT or GRE scores are not required.

Can I still submit my scores if my program does not require them?

Yes. If you believe a test score would complement your application, please request a test score report to be sent to Temple University (GRE: 2906 / GMAT: 72S3T52). Official scores must be reported from a GMAT or GRE test taken within the last five years.

International Applicants

I attended a non-US institution, what documents should I upload?

For an application to be considered complete, we need a transcript/marksheet and a diploma/graduation certification. If academic records are not issued in English, native language records must be accompanied by a literal translation prepared by an appropriate university or government official. If your school is unable to provide a translation, approved translators can be found at American Translators Association.

To accelerate the admissions decision process, copies of these documents are acceptable.

If admitted, you must submit official copies of all transcripts and degree/graduation certificates before matriculation.

For other questions about what official documents are required, please review the Graduate School’s International Applicants page.

Do I need to submit a credential evaluation?

When you submit your application, a credential evaluation is not required. However, after our admissions team reviews your academic history, we may request a credential evaluation by a NACES Accredited Evaluation Agency to be submitted.

If you have already had an education course credential evaluation completed by a NACES member, you can include it in your application materials.

Am I required to submit a score report from TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo?

Applicants who completed an undergraduate degree in the United States or other English-speaking country are waived of the English-language testing requirements.

An English proficiency language test such as the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo is required if:

  • You have not earned a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a U.S. institution
  • You earned a degree from a non-US institution for which the language of instruction was not English

Additionally, there is the possibility of a waiver for these tests. Please review the Graduate School’s website about the English Proficiency Test to see if you qualify.

What is the student visa process like?

For detailed information on the student visa process, please visit the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) website at isss.temple.edu. They provide comprehensive guidance and support for international students.
