The Spring 2024 Scholarship application process will open in mid-February 2024 and will remain open for approximately four weeks. Students will apply directly through the scholarship system when it is open. Applications will be reviewed from mid-March into April for Fall 2024 award disbursement.
Only students receiving awards will be notified of their status and will need to write a thank you note and provide a picture for the donor before awards will be disbursed.

The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarships for students in Temple University’s School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management to honor the achievements and memories of Joel M. & Lenore Lewis Abels and who plan to pursue a career in tourism and hospitality management. Recipients will be selected by the Dean or his or her designee(s).
The Joel M. and Lenore Lewis Abels Endowed Scholarship at the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management honors the memory and achievements of Joel M. and Lenore Abels.
Joel M. Abels was editor and publisher of Travel Trade magazine for 50 years. He was a staunch supporter of the travel agency community and fought to keep the concerns and goals of the small business owner in front of the leaders of the travel industry in order to remind them that travel agents were the best distribution channel for them. Abels, known for his active lobbying and legislative action in Washington, D.C. on behalf of the industry, also created the CRUISE-A-THON and Leisure Travel/Home Based/Winter CRUISE-A-THON trade shows. He also conducted the annual Travel Trade Travel Industry Summit Conference for industry leaders and was inducted into ASTA’s Travel Hall of Fame in 2001 and into CLIA’s first Industry Hall of Fame.
The purpose of the fund is to assist today’s tourism students in becoming tomorrow’s industry leaders while maintaining the memory of Joel M. and Lenore Abels.
The purpose of the Delores M. Andy Scholarship is to recognize graduating seniors majoring in Sport and Recreation Management who best exemplify the “spirit” of volunteerism in their communities. Professor Emerita Delores M. Andy was herself a nationally recognized model of volunteerism, having provided outstanding service to her own community. She was also well known as a leader, a teacher, a mentor and a creator of opportunities for students to reach their full potential. Her commitment to excellence and professionalism is what led STHM alumni to establish the scholarship fund.
Elizabeth Hicklin Barber Scholarship is an endowed fund that honors the legacy of Dr. Elizabeth H. Barber. Dr. Barber was one of the main architects and the driving force behind the establishment of the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) at Temple University. A small idea in 1998, Dr. Barber led the school for 18 years, graduating thousands of students from around the world, recruiting over 25 top faculty, and solidifying the young school’s reputation among peer schools far and wide.
This scholarship provides support to junior and senior students with financial need who are enrolled in the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management and who have demonstrated organizational leadership. Preference shall be given to students who are underrepresented in the area of Sport, Recreation, Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management.
The David Bitman Endowed Scholarship is given annually to an outstanding junior or senior in Sport and Recreation Management with financial need and who plans to pursue a Master of Science in Sport Business at Temple University. Additionally, a strong emphasis will be placed on community service when selecting the recipient. Eligible candidates are selected by a committee appointed by the Dean. Candidates who are planning to pursue a Master of Science in Sport Business at Temple University are identified from the junior and senior classes.
David was an athlete who loved sports both on and off the field. He was also extremely community minded with joy and enthusiasm for life. This scholarship honors David’s memory and celebrates his life.
This scholarship has truly made a difference in the lives of students who have received it.

“The David Bitman Endowed Scholarship allowed me to realize my academic potential and pursue my professional dreams as a student in Temple University’s Sport and Recreation Management graduate program, and research assistant in the associated Sport Industry Research Center. Furthermore, the scholarship allowed me to make the most out of my summer, working as a programmer and supervisor for my local youth recreation department in Havertown, which was a great way to connect with and give back to the community, and directly applied to my area of academic interest, youth development. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for juniors and seniors in Tourism and Hospitality Management who best exemplify the spirit of hospitality and devotion to the industry as displayed by Marie Baker Brown.
Marie was a special friend to so many, and the PHLCVB is proud to partner with the Temple University School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management to create an endowment in her name. The PHLCVB has made the first generous contribution toward the endowment so that each year, at the PHLCVB Annual Luncheon, a scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates Marie’s spirit of hospitality. The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for incoming freshman or current undergraduates majoring in Tourism and Hospitality Management in STHM with financial need. Students must be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant Program as a part of their financial aid package.
The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for juniors or seniors enrolled in STHM who best exemplify the spirit and passion for travel and tourism that Delores DeShields displayed. The recipients should embody a determination to achieve academic success, to have dreams and to never give up through challenges and disappointments.
Delores’ true passion in life was travel, having lived in England and traveling throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. Although she loved her hometown of Philadelphia, her annual trips to Florida with her son Greg were her favorite. Delores’ special tourism belief was: “Each time I go on vacation I am looking for fun, laughter, and conversation with friends. I like to visit new places, as well as meet new people. The keywords for vacation are fun and enjoyment.”
For Delores’ legacy and love for education to live on forever, the Delores W. DeShields Scholarship Fund has been established to help Temple University School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management students achieve their dreams. The DeShields family has generously made the single largest contribution to the school to date. Please join them in celebrating Delores’ life by supporting this important educational initiative.
The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarships to students enrolled in the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management who are intent on a career in hospitality and event management, with preference given to students in this field of study who exemplify Ms. Gilmore’s professional and entrepreneurial spirit. Applicants should be intent on a career in hospitality or event management.

The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarships to students with financial need, majoring in Tourism and Hospitality Management, who are intent on a career in hospitality and event management.
Linda’s career in event management began after college, when she worked for the Gray Line tour company at the Capital Hilton, where she later became a manager. In 1977, with a $50 investment, she founded a firm, the Capital Informer, offering tours of Washington’s most famous sites. As her business grew, Linda designed and created one of the first technology systems to manage tours and other destination management practices. She eventually renamed her firm the TCI Companies.
Her company managed 50,000 events for more than 5,000 clients. The events included the National Spelling Bee, the second inauguration of President Bush, the 2003 World Figure Skating Championships in Washington and hundreds of corporate, association and other events throughout the world.
She branched out into sporting events and in 1996, chronicled the impact of the Carolina Panthers football team on its community in a coffee-table book, “Carolina Panthers Sunday.” Her company organized the 70th-anniversary celebration for the Washington Redskins, and she supported efforts to bring the Olympics to Washington.
Along with Joe Goldblatt, a professor at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland in the Tourism, Hospitality and Events Group (THE Group), they used their theory of eventology to design the curriculum for an event leadership certificate program at Temple’s School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management.
Linda was a 1996 finalist for the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. She served on many boards and helped found the first network of destination management companies.In 1998, she taught in George Washington University’s event management program and traveled to the Philippines and other countries to share her expertise with students.
The Linda F. Higgison Scholarship celebrates the life and legacy of Linda and her spirit will continue to live on through those who are awarded this scholarship.
The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarships to students who are receiving their degree in Sport and Recreation Management in the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management, who best exemplify Gavin’s spirit of perseverance, academic excellence and community involvement. Applicants should be sport and recreation majors.
He coached the 1960 Temple freshman football team to a 4-1 record and Simon Gratz High School to an undefeated season in 1955. He rebuilt the Temple track program and coached his runners to the 1966 Middle Atlantic Conference University Division Championship. He received the Temple University Award in 1952 for a combination of athletic and scholastic achievement. This scholarship honors the contributions that Gavin White, Jr. has made to Temple University.
The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for students majoring in Tourism and Hospitality Management who best exemplify the John Mannino’s passion for the hospitality industry.
The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for upperclass undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need in STHM.
The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for students enrolled in STHM who have financial need and who have demonstrated significant involvement in extracurricular activities.
This scholarship fund providesa renewable scholarship to recognize and reward outstanding undergraduates who are leaders in their community, with a preference for students enrolled in the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management and a secondary preference for students enrolled in the Fox School of Business. Student will maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA and demonstrate financial need.
The purpose of the Ira G. Shapiro Scholarship is to recognize undergraduate students in STHM who best exemplify academic excellence and outstanding leadership. During his 44-year tenure at Temple University, Professor Emeritus Shapiro often referred to those students as the ones who reminded him of why he chose a career in higher education—for the honor and the privilege of working with outstanding students, the next generation of leaders in the sport, recreation, tourism and hospitality industries.
The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships to selected senior internship students in sport, recreation, tourism or hospitality. Once an application has been submitted, eligible candidates will be contacted regarding submission of a resume and essay. This scholarship is based on financial need.
Established in honor of form Associate Vice Dean, Jeffrey W. Montague, this scholarship fund is to provide scholarships for students in good academic standing enrolled in the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management who have financial need, with preference for students who are United States citizens.
This scholarship provides funding for students studying abroad for a semester or completing an internship outside of the United States.
This scholarship provides funding for a student completing either an internship outside of the Philadelphia region or spending a semester abroad.
This scholarship provides support to undergraduate students in STHM with financial need who are graduates of a high school in the city of Philadelphia or in the State of New Jersey, with preference given to a student majoring in Tourism and Hospitality Management.
The purpose of the Meryl Levitz Scholarship for Emerging Leaders in Tourism and Hospitality is to provide one annual scholarship to a second-year student entering their third year or a third-year student entering their fourth year of studies with demonstrated financial need enrolled in the School with a minimum 3.0 GPA who is majoring in Tourism and Hospitality.
The purpose of the Jacqueline McWilliams Graduate Scholarship is to provide scholarships to support graduate students with financial need who are pursuing a degree in sports management, with preference for students who are graduates of a historically Black college or university.
Scholarships will be awarded to incoming or current Fox School of Business or Sport, Tourism, and Hospitality Management undergraduate students who grew up in the River Ward district (Port Richmond, Bridesburg, Kensington, and Fishtown) and are deemed eligible by the Fox School CAFSBM committee or the STHM Dean’s office & in compliance with donor intent. Scholarships are renewable for up to 4 years if the student maintains a 3.0 CGPA or better.
The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships to students with financial need enrolled in the School, with a preference for students majoring in Tourism and Hospitality Management.

Skål International Philadelphia is the Philadelphia area club of Skal International. Skål is a professional organization of tourism leaders around the world, promoting global tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and tourism industry. Its members, the industry’s managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest.
This scholarship was established to provide more opportunities for students, future Skalleagues.
Skål International today has approximately 20,000 members in 450 Clubs throughout 85 nations. Most activities occur at local level, moving up through National Committees, under the umbrella of Skål International, headquartered at the General Secretariat in Torremolinos, Spain.
