Q&A with STHM

From Southhampton, PA, Amira Green, class of 2025, is a member of the Temple Owls women’s track and field program, specializing in the high jump event. Green tells us about navigating her college decision process, how she feels STHM positively supports her pursuits as a student-athlete, and what her goals are for the spring semester and outdoor track and field season.

Name: Amira Green

Sport: Women’s Track and Field

Hometown: Southampton, PA (Neshaminy High School)

Major: Sport and Recreation Management

Favorite student-athlete memory: “The time I started my first ever ‘clap’ during a meet at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, NY! For reference, starting a ‘clap’ as a jumper is when, before you jump, you invite the crowd to ‘clap’ along as you attempt your jump. I was attempting a new personal best so the whole stadium joined in to ‘clap’ for me. It was a very surreal experience and had a lasting impact on me, especially to feel that support from the arena full of spectators, my fellow athletes and coaches.”

What does it mean to you to be a student-athlete at the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management?

As someone who plans to continue working within the sport industry beyond college, I feel very thankful that I get to simultaneously pursue both my student-athlete experience in collegiate athletics and an education in the sport industry—that is why I chose to attend STHM! I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to study a subject I am very interested in.

What was your decision process like when choosing to attend Temple?

The process was somewhat difficult because my decision came during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when the college athletic recruiting process was a bit difficult. I knew that I wanted to compete in track in college, and I was very fortunate to find Temple, especially because it offered me the chance to be a student-athlete and the most financial support athletically and academically.

How has STHM supported your pursuits as a student-athlete?

I have found STHM to be very encouraging and accommodating. In addition to understanding that my schedule as a student-athlete can get quite busy, my professors have always been supportive in working with me to keep up with my classwork. Amazingly, I’ve had professors ask what my track schedule is so they can come to a meet to support me, too!

How will your student-athlete experience benefit you beyond your time at Temple?

I find the experience has not only improved my capabilities of time management and emotional regulation, but it has also given me amazing connections—some that I know I will definitely utilize as I prepare to navigate my career in the sport industry.

What would you say to a prospective student-athlete who is considering coming to Temple?

Above all, I would tell prospective Temple student-athletes to make sure it is the right place for them. Temple is a great place, but make sure to explore the major options that interest you, talk to the team, talk to the coaches and get a feel of the campus area. I highly recommend taking advantage of the opportunity athletics offers to stay for a day or two with a current student-athlete during the recruitment process to truly get a feel for what Philadelphia is like and everything the city and campus has to offer.

What do you hope to achieve this spring semester? (Both athletically and academically)

I hope to accomplish so much! Athletically, I hope to set a new personal best in the high jump (and join the six-foot club!) while also qualifying for nationals in the event. Last year I made it to the first round of finals, but only a few are selected for the championships. Academically, I hope to continue classroom success and upon graduation next year, also be accepted into Fox’s master’s program in digital marketing.
