MINORS AND CERTIFICATES

The School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) offers a sport management minor and certificates in sport management and sport marketing. These programs allow undergraduate students across Temple University to enhance their education with exposure to a program that prepares students to become leaders in these exciting industries.


MINOR IN SPORT MANAGEMENT

The Minor in Sport Management prepares students to lead and succeed in the business of sport, recreation and leisure management. This 18 credit minor integrates foundational business principles with innovative concepts related directly to the distinct industry of sport.


CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

All Temple University undergraduate students may enroll in STHM certificate programs. These 12 credit programs offer a focused approach to specific aspects of working in sport, recreation and event management.

Certificate in Esports

Consumer demand for esports and the growth of organized video game competitions has generated considerable attention from sport, event, and entertainment industries. Esports has grown from a fringe activity to a popular sport entertainment product fueled both by participants and spectators with competitions involving both professional and amateur participants. Esports represents a sport entertainment product requiring management expertise related to events, merchandise, sponsorship, endorsements, marketing, technology, human resources, social media, governance, legal issues, celebrity culture, and athlete well-being.

The Department of Sport and Recreation Management is offering four courses to serve as the foundation for understanding business and managerial elements of esports. Esports courses are taught by industry professionals and faculty with knowledge of esports. Each of the four courses involved synchronous and asynchronous learning delivered in seven-week on-line intensive formats.

Certificate in Sport Management

The Certificate in Sport Management introduces students to the fast-paced world of sport, recreation and leisure management. The sport management program integrates foundational business principles with innovative concepts related directly to the distinct industry of sport.

Certificate in Sport Marketing

The Certificate in Sport Marketing prepares students to understand the different facets of marketing and how it relates to the sport and recreation industry. Students gain a foundation of business principles and are able to customize the program through different electives.

Certificate in Event Management

The Certificate in Event Management exposes students to courses that will prepare them to lead and succeed in the dynamic world of event planning and management. The program is designed to be integrated into any major outside of STHM and will deliver marketable skills that can be applied in any field.


Declaring a Minor or Certificate

Current Temple University students interested in declaring a minor or certificate in the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) can do so in two easy steps.

  1. Attend an STHM Aware and Declare Days information session.
  2. After attending an STHM Aware and Declare Days, your completed Change of Program form will be reviewed and processed by STHM’s Center for Student Services. If approved, it will be submitted electronically to the Office of the University Registrar. In 3-5 business days, the request will be processed and then visible within Self-Service Banner (Student Information).

To seek assistance in monitoring your progress, students are asked to meet with an academic advisor during walk-in hours. Students unavailable during walk-in hours and those who need to have in-depth conversations can utilize the Academic Advising Appointment System.
