Student Advising

The Center for Student Services (CSS) — the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) internal advising unit — offers individualized information on placement exams and results, majors, minors, course sequence and load, scheduling, career planning and academic resources. Our priority is equipping students with a custom strategy to make well-informed decisions and help them on the path to the career of their dreams.

Advising Services

The Center for Student Services has many avenues of assistance available to students from one-on-one council to groups, weekend hours and even virtual advising is available. Read on to learn more.

Individual Advising

The Center for Student Services staff is here to assist students throughout their academic careers. Students have the ability to make appointments for individual meetings with an advisor using our online system. Prior to each meeting, students are advised to conduct online research in order to best prepare their questions and to bring any documents relevant to the meeting.

E-Group Asynchronous Advising

E-Group Advising occurs each Fall and Spring Semesters in the weeks prior to registration. E-Group Advising delivers pertinent curriculum and policy information as well as important announcements and updates via an asynchronous video and quiz format. E-Group Advising is used to ensure students are current on academic policy and curricular information and only required if a student does not attend a registration workshop or meet with their academic advisor each semester.

Virtual Advising

Through Zoom, you can view and share documents as well as communicate with an advisor at your convenience. Virtual Advising is by appointment only, using the STHM Appointment System. Students must select the Virtual Advising option when available. Ten minutes prior to your booked virtual appointment time, you will receive an invitation via your Temple University email account.

Walk-In Advising

CSS offers students the flexibility to drop in at their convenience. We provide scheduled days and times when students can drop in for a 10-minute session without an appointment. All walk-in appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Should you require longer than 10 minutes, please schedule an appointment. Extended walk-in hours are offered during high volume times – priority registration and the first two weeks of a given semester, excluding summer summers.

PEER ADVISING

Trained undergraduate students provide daily walk-in hours to assist their peers in advising related questions. Peer advisors assist with preparing graduation plans, help students search for courses, and answer common academic and curricular related questions. Please consult the CSS Canvas site for the Peer Advising hours each semester.

Advising Resources

Degree Audit Reporting System

The Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) simplifies how students and their advisors plan and track their academic career at STHM. This self-service system to request audits of degree requirements, view course history and review transfer credit evaluations.

STHM encourages students to review DARS on a regular basis — especially at the end of the semester — to review remaining courses and progress. It is also recommended to check DARS after course registration each semester to view how upcoming classes will count toward the fulfillment of requirements.

Students can access the DARS through TUPortal by selecting the “Student Tools” tab, then “Records Channel” and finally, “Degree Audit”.

Visit the DARS website for additional resources.

Registration Information

All information needed for course registration at STHM and Temple University — including important dates, course listing and how to register, etc — can be found on the Office of the University Registrar (OUR) online guide .

Returning Students

All undergraduate students wishing to enroll in any given semester or summer session must have an active student status with the university. To facilitate your return, please file completed forms must be filed well in advance of listed deadlines.

Please note: Graduates and Professional students should contact Jim Alton, Manager of Graduate Student Services, at jim.alton@temple.edu.
