Fox School to honor Korman Communities' Steven H. Korman with 2012 Musser Award
October 16th, 2012
Temple University's Fox School of Business will award Steven H. Korman, founder of Korman Communities, with the 2012 Musser Excellence in Leadership Award, the school's highest honor for outstanding achievement, leadership and commitment to the community by a distinguished member of industry.
As founder of Korman Communities and partner of The Korman Company, Korman oversees one of the largest management and ownership firms of residential, commercial and industrial property.
"In addition to being a pioneer in his industry, Steve is a tireless advocate for the access to excellence that Temple University provides," Fox School of Business Dean M. Moshe Porat said. "He not only serves and supports the Fox School and the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, he also improves many, many lives in the Philadelphia region and beyond."
Korman has chaired the Advisory Board, recently renamed the Dean's Council, of Temple's School of Tourism and Hospitality Management for the past 12 years and has been advisory board chair of MANNA for eight years, among various other volunteer positions, including his involvement with Project H.O.M.E.'s Honickman Learning Center and the School of Tourism's Fruits of the Spirits farmers market, which Korman has supported for the past two years in collaboration with Project H.O.M.E. and Fresh Grocer.
Proceeds from the 16th annual Musser Excellence in Leadership Awards Dinner, to be held the night of Nov. 14 in Mitten Hall on Temple's Main Campus, will support the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Scholarship Fund, which helps students reach their highest potential as they become the next generation of industry leaders in the tourism, hospitality, sport and recreation industries.
"Steve's compassionate caring for the North Philadelphia and Temple communities deserves the utmost praise," said School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Associate Dean Elizabeth H. Barber. "His passion and his commitment to service are unparalleled."
In his 50 years in the real estate industry, Korman revolutionized the multi-family sector. He has been responsible for all aspects of the multi-family portfolio during his career, developing and marketing KormanSuites throughout the region. Korman pioneered the furnished-suite concept by introducing fully furnished apartments at more than 30 Korman-owned, multi-family properties throughout the Mid-Atlantic region that can be leased monthly. Apartment operators now use the furnished suite concept, introduced by Korman, nationally.
The Musser Excellence in Leadership Award was established in honor of the achievements and entrepreneurial spirit of Warren V. "Pete" Musser. As founder of Safeguard Scientifics, and as its leader for nearly four decades, Musser formed numerous technology-oriented companies that helped create Greater Philadelphia's reputation for technological innovation.
Previous Musser Award winners include Stephen A. Cozen and Patrick J. O'Connor of Cozen O' Connor; Gerry Lenfest, president and CEO, The Lenfest Group; Ralph J. Roberts, founder, Comcast Corp.; Dennis Alter, chairman and CEO, Advanta Corp.; Sidney Kimmel, founder and chairman, Jones Apparel Group; Willard G. Rouse III, former chairman and CEO, Liberty Property Trust; and William J. Avery, former chairman and CEO, Crown Cork and Seal Co.
