RESEARCH/SCHOLARSHIP INTEREST

My research focus is services management. My doctoral research was underpinned by the conceptualisation and empirical validation of the Employee Based Brand Equity (EBBE) model, which was a first with respect to exploring brand equity from an employee’s perspective. My research interests continue to reside in the services management domain with a particular emphasis on the internal stakeholder’s role (e.g. employee) in realising marketing strategies such as market orientation and brand management or more specifically, in the creation of competitively sustainable service experiences. My research is published in international peer reviewed journals, which include International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, Internal Journal of Hospitality Management, European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Services Marketing, Journal of Brand Management, Services Marketing Quarterly and Qualitative Market Research: An International Journal.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, it is my primary responsibility to provide students with an environment that is conducive to learning that is both meaningful and relevant in the context of their chosen area of study. I am driven by my belief that I have a duty to the students to ad to their existing body of knowledge, enriching their thinking (depth and breadth) as evidenced in their end of semester results. As such, my perceived responsibilities as an educator have shaped my teaching philosophy, which is captured within the following statement.

My teaching philosophy is to stimulate interest and encourage active thinking in the classroom for the purpose of maximising student-learning outcomes. Through the adoption of a bridging approach to my teaching, I strive to demonstrate to students the important linkages between their academic frame of reference and industry practicality. In recognition of the constantly changing environment in which we operate, my teaching philosophy reflects a regeneration approach to both teaching style, in recognition of teaching diversity (i.e. multi cultural classrooms, delivery modes), as well as curriculum development, in recognition of the changing industry landscape.

To enable me to transfer my teaching philosophy from vision to reality, my thoughts and actions are guided by three principles, namely communication, industry engagement and flexibility.

  • Hospitality Marketing

International Undergraduate Courses Taught – Chinese University of Hong Kong

  • Contemporary Issues In Tourism and Hotel Management

Curriculum Innovation and Development

  • Curriculum innovation and the development of an undergraduate ‘capstone’ course - Contemporary Issues in Tourism and Hotel Management. This course is designed to provide graduating students the opportunity to integrate and apply a variety of disciplines to examine current industry related issues. The course provides students the opportunity to apply the learning they have acquired over the duration of the 3 year program and ensures their knowledge and capabilities are reflective of ‘work ready’ graduates.
  • Curriculum innovation and development of a first year undergraduate course - Foundation Studies. This course is designed to introduce students to their field of interest (i.e. sport, event, tourism or hotel management), stimulate their enthusiasm for their major as well as provide them with academic skills necessary to meet the requirements of the degree
  • Development of an Assurance of Learning workshop – The workshop sought to inform and educate course convenors about the accreditation process and requirements. It enabled the development and integration course specific standards, via a rubric methodology, for the purpose of AACSB accreditation
  • Curriculum innovation and development of an undergraduate marketing course – The innovation of publishing a customised text and developing a marketing work book were implemented to enhance student engagement in meaningful and relevant material. As a result, the innovation in teaching material assisted students in the learning process as well as the satisfactory completion of required assessment.
