STHM Alum Jim O'Donnell
Jim O’Donnell is passionate about hotels and hospitality and sales and marketing.
Originally from Allentown, Pennsylvania, Jim moved to Philadelphia in 1997 to attend Temple University after completing his Associate of the Arts Degree. In 1999, Jim earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing and Legal Studies from the Fox School of Business & Management. Ten years later, after working in the field, Jim completed a Master of Tourism & Hospitality Management Degree from the Temple University School of Tourism & Hospitality Management in 2009.
Jim is Director of National Sales for Destination Hotels, the largest operator of independent hotels and resorts in North America. In his role, Jim manages the Northeast and Southeast regions for Destination Hotels. In his role, he is responsible for the strategic selling of 40+ unique and authentic hotels for meetings and events.
Jim has 15 years of experience in hotels and casinos. He started his career in hotel operations in the front office and housekeeping departments. Later, Jim worked in sales and service for groups, then business travel sales and ultimately group and national sales. Prior to joining Destination Hotels in 2013, Jim worked with brands such as Omni Hotels, Borgata and Caesars Entertainment and in cities such as Philadelphia, New York, Atlantic City and Las Vegas.
Jim has co-authored published articles on casino operations and management. Jim is trained in Green Meetings and holds a Healthcare Meeting Compliance Certificate (HMCC) as a certified pharmaceuticals, medical and healthcare meetings professional. He is an active member of Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) as well as the Mid-Atlantic Society of Association Executives (MASAE).
Jim has been guest lecturer on topics including meetings and events, sales and marketing and hotel and casino management at institutions including Temple University and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV). Jim serves as an adjunct professor in the School of Tourism & Hospitality Management at Temple University, where he has taught both graduate and undergraduate courses since 2013.
Jim resides in South Jersey with his wife, Yvonne (Temple University, BSN, ’03) and young children, where they are active in youth sports and other community organizations. Jim is a Philadelphia sports fan, especially the Philadelphia Eagles and Temple Owls.
